Our Flag Means Death Synopsis
Our Flag Means Death is a one-of-a-kind new comedy largely (very loosely) inspired on the actual experiences of Stede Bonnet, an 18th-century would-be pirate. Stede becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge when Bonnet exchanges the seemingly charmed life of a nobleman for that of a swashbuckling buccaneer. Stede’s fortunes shift following a catastrophic run-in with the famed Captain Blackbeard, as he struggles to earn the respect of his possibly mutinous crew. Stede and his crew then seek to reassemble their ship and endure life on the high seas.
The first three episodes of the series begin after Bonnet has already set sail with his ragtag pirate crew and finds himself in a number of misadventures, such as accidentally killing a British naval officer and holding two others hostage; running aground and dealing with island natives, and getting into trouble in the Republic of Pirates. Not to mention the attention of the most famous pirate of all, Black Beard, who ultimately catches up with Bonnet at the end of episode 3. The cast of Our Flag Means Death is led by veteran actor Rhys Darby (Jumanji: The Next Level), who plays Stede Bonnett, and Academy and BAFTA Award winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), who plays the famed pirate Blackbeard. Darby and Waititi are real-life friends who have worked together on several occasions, including appearing in 2014’s What We Do in the Shadows and Waititi directing Darby in series and movies such as Flight of the Concords, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and the upcoming Next Goal Wins.
